Chair of Physical Geography and Hydrometeorology
The Chair of Physical Geography and Hydrometeorology was founded in 1933, originally called the Chair of Physical Geography, and in 2009, it was renamed the Chair of Physical Geography and Hydrometeorology. The head of the Chair is Ph.D., Associate Professor Arsen Grigoryan.
The employees of the Chair of Physical Geography and Hydrometeorology study and research the erosion, mudslide, and landslide phenomena of the territory of the republic, the problems of water resources, and nature protection. The outcomes of the research have been published in the form of many scientific articles and monographs. At the same time, scientific and methodical works are carried out in the Chair. The Chair members are the authors of many university textbooks and manuals.
The Chair ensures the organization of physical-geographical and hydrometeorological courses using modern technologies, including remote sensing and geographic information systems (GIS). In the past period, the scientific research works of the Chair were mainly carried out in the directions of researching physical geography, natural and anthropogenic landscapes, global climate change, and physical-geographic and hydro-meteorological processes.
In the last decade, the Chair’s cooperation with the leading universities of several countries of the world has been significantly expanded. In 2010, a scientific cooperation and student exchange agreement was signed between YSU and the Russian State University of Hydrometeorology (RSU, St. Petersburg), and in 2016, between YSU and the Humboldt University of Berlin, which has been extended for another 3 years in January 2022.
The Chair implements the "Geography" (Undergraduate) and "Hydrometeorology" (Master's) educational programs.
