Chair of Russian Linguistics, Typology, and Communication Theory
In 1937, the outstanding linguist, Ph.D., Associate Professor Rafael Melkumyan founded the Chair of Russian Language at Yerevan State University and became the first head of it. Then, Ph.D., Professor Davit Jaghatspanyan led the Chair.
In 1974, based on the Chair of the Russian Language, the Theoretical Chair of the Russian Language was created, which included the leading Russian scholars of Armenia. Later, the Theoretical Chair of the Russian Language was renamed the Chair of Language Typology, Russian Language Theory and Methodology, and since 2007, the Chair of Russian Linguistics, Typology and Communication Theory.
The Chair was headed by the outstanding scientist, specialist in translation theory, Ph.D., Professor, and academician of the National Academy of Sciences of the Republic of Armenia, Levon Mkrtchyan. After him, renowned linguist and talented pedagogue, Ph.D., Professor Hranush Ara Margaryan, an outstanding scientist, philosopher, and linguist, Ph.D., Professor, Academician of the NAS of RA Eduard Atayan, and Ph.D., Associate Professor Ivetta Manucharyan, headed the Chair. Since 2006, Professor, a member of the Armenian Philosophical Academy Lilit Brutyan, has been heading the Chair.
The name of the unit indicates the leading scientific and scientific-methodical directions in which the members of the Chair are engaged today. They are:
1) Current problems of the modern Russian language, in particular the issues of Russian phonetics, lexicology, semantics, grammar, word formation, terminology, stylistics and speech culture, pragmatics, as well as Russian teaching methodology,
2) The problems of language typology, in particular the comparative-typological study of Russian and Armenian, as well as Slavic languages (Russian, Czech, etc.),
3) Issues of communication theory, including cross-cultural communication and translation.
The lecturers of the Chair of Russian Linguistics, Typology, and Communication Theory are engaged in scientific activities. They publish monographs, articles, and dictionaries, as well as participate in many international conferences. Along with educational and scientific activities, the members of the Chair also emphasize scientific methodical work. It includes the creation of numerous textbooks, study manuals, study dictionaries, dictation collections, and curricula for both Russian philology faculties and public schools.
The Chair closely cooperates with Penza State University of the Russian Federation. Theoretical seminars dedicated to current issues of Russian linguistics are regularly held in the Chair, where lectures are also given by invited specialists.
The Chair implements the Undergraduate educational programs "Russian Language and Literature" and "Cross-cultural Communication and Translation (Russian)" and the Master's degree educational program on "Russian Language and Literature".
