The Faculty of Armenian Philology is one of the founding faculties of the university (1919). The faculties of Oriental Studies, Russian philology, European Languages and Communication, and Journalism were formed on this basis. Science devotees Manuk Abeghyan, Hrachya Acharyan, Stepan Malkhasyants, Grigor Ghapantsyan, Ashkharabaek Melik-Kalantar, Gevorg Asatur, Arsen Terteryan, writer Kostan Zaryan, and many others taught philological subjects in the newly established faculty. Many of the founding professors of the faculty received higher education in remarkable foreign universities, and some of them lived and worked in different countries, but the university opened in the homeland became a unifying force, and brought them together.

The faculty became and remained a leading educational center of the Armenian language and literature. After the founder devotees, prominent scientists, academicians, and corresponding members of the academy, doctors of science have been engaged in scientific-pedagogical activities in the faculty for different years.

Many outstanding writers (G. Mahari, N. Zaryan, Kh. Dashtens, H. Shiraz, P. Sevak, V. Davtyan, S. Kaputikyan, and others), literary critics, linguists, statespersons, devoted teachers of the Armenian language and literature were graduates of the faculty.

The faculty operates a three-level education system: Undergraduate, Master’s, and Postgraduate.

Even today, the faculty continues to fulfill the work founded by the distinguished seniors. The faculty has and continues to study many issues related to linguistics, and literary studies, creating monographs, manuals, and textbooks.

The authors of many textbooks on the Armenian language and literature for different classes of public schools are former and current professors of the Faculty of Armenian Philology of YSU.

The professors of the faculty, as guest specialists, regularly give lectures at foreign universities, undergo training in prestigious international educational and scientific institutions, and are also involved in local and international research programs. The Faculty of Armenian Philology has scientific and cultural ties with various Armenian studies institutions of the Republic of Armenia and the Diaspora, as well as with the Writer’s Union of Armenia, the National Academy of Sciences of the Republic of Armenia, Matenadaran, house museums of Armenian writers, and leading schools. Due to the wide cooperative relations, the faculty regularly organizes international, republican, and inter-university scientific sessions, conferences, and various other events.

Student daily life at the faculty becomes more interesting thanks to the activity of student organizations. The best students of the faculty receive nominal scholarships.

Students have the opportunity to get a pedagogue’s qualification by participating in the courses of the pedagogical block (on a paid basis).

Armenian philology is a profession in demand both in Armenia and abroad, particularly in the labor market of the Diaspora. Graduates of the faculty have the opportunity to carry out scientific and pedagogical activities. Graduates of different years worked and are working in public schools, libraries, Armenian studies centers of foreign universities, repositories of manuscripts, civil service, legal system, translation, publishing organizations, editorial offices, and elsewhere.
