In 1957, The Chair of Computational Mathematics was opened in the Faculty of Physics and Mathematics at YSU, based on which, in 1971, the Faculty of Applied Mathematics was founded, which was later renamed the Faculty of Informatics and Applied Mathematics (IAM). The faculty is the leading scientific and educational center of Armenia in the directions of informatics and applied mathematics, where high-quality programmers are trained.
S.N. Mergelyan, a prominent scientist, and correspondent member of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR played a decisive role in the establishment of the faculty, the determination of scientific directions, and the preparation of personnel for teaching at the faculty. He was also the first head of one of the three chairs of the newly created faculty: the chair of digital analysis.
The faculty has a three-level education system: Undergraduate, Master's, and Postgraduate.
According to the curriculum, basic mathematical training is planned for the students of the IAM faculty, and courses related to modern information technologies are taught.
Doctors and candidates of science work in the chairs of the faculty, many of whom are famous not only in Armenia but also outside its borders.
Throughout its whole activity, the Faculty has effectively cooperated with the Yerevan Research Institute of Mathematical Machines and the Institute of Informatics and Automation Problems of the National Academy of Sciences of the Republic of Armenia (formerly the Computing Center of the National Academy of Sciences of the USSR), constantly providing these organizations with high-quality personnel. The faculty has active connections with many universities and scientific centers in Germany, France, the USA, Poland, Sweden, and other countries, as well as with M. V. Lomonosov Moscow State University, A. A. Dorodnitsyn Computing Center of Russian Academy of Sciences, and with V. A. Steklov Mathematical Institute of Russian Academy of Sciences. Faculty employees and graduate students participate in international conferences, and their scientific works are published in prestigious scientific periodicals.
Student daily life at the faculty becomes more interesting thanks to the activity of student organizations. Within the framework of exchange programs, students of the faculty are allowed to continue their studies at prestigious universities abroad. The compulsory educational practice of students is mainly organized in the mathematics and mechanics institutes of the NAS of RA, as well as in the Institute of Informatics and Automation Problems of the NAS of RA.
Graduates of the faculty are in great demand in the labor market: most of them work in various organizations in many countries around the world: academic and research institutes, higher educational institutions, state and government organizations, IT companies, commercial banks, and elsewhere.
