YSU TEAM TO PARTICIPATE IN THE FINAL ROUND OF THE INTERNATIONAL MOOT COURT IN GENEVA
For the first time participating in the Nelson Mandela Human Rights World Moot Court Competition, YSU team was among the best teams in the world in the first round and was given the opportunity to take part in the final round of the competition.
YSU has applied for the participation in the Nelson Mandela Human Rights World Moot Court Competition for the first time this year. It is organized by the Human Rights Center and the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights in cooperation with the Global Campus of Human Rights.
The competition makes focus on human rights based on the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, the Covenant of Civil and Political Rights, the European Convention on Human Rights and other international sources. This year’s trial is related to the right to life, the prohibition of torture and a range of family-related rights.
The first stage of the competition involves a written presentation of the positions of the parties. As a result, the best teams will take part in the oral stage in Geneva, Switzerland.
This year, more than 230 university teams have applied for the participation in the Moot Court Competition. YSU team was among the top 50 best teams in the world in the first round and got an opportunity to take part in the oral round of July 15-20, 2018 in Geneva. Such authoritative universities as the Oxford University of Great Britain and Yale University in the United States will also take part.
YSU team members are YSU Faculty of Law 4th year student Harutyun Hovhannisyan and Master student Shogher Sahakyan. Team trainer is Grigor Chobanyan, PhD student at YSU Faculty of Law (Chair of European and International Law).
Apart from the original moot court, within the framework of the event a one-day educational and research visit is also planned, which aims to introduce students to the activities of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights and the Human Rights Council.
By the way, this moot court is more significant as this year marks the 100th anniversary of Nelson Mandela, the 70th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and the 10th anniversary of the Nelson Mandela Human Rights World Moot Court Competition.
