“IN FACT, IT IS VERY HARD TO BUILD PEACE”: NEIL JARMAN
By the initiative of YSU International Cooperation Department professor Neil Jarman from Northern Ireland delivered a lecture “Transition From Armed Conflict to Peace: The Case of Northern Ireland” for the university students. The event was held at YSU Paleans Hall.
The lecture was organized by Caucasus Institute within the scope of “Engaging society and decision-makers in dialogue for peace over the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict” program.
The lecturer was Neil Jarman, CEO of the Institute of Conflict Research, Senior Research Fellow at the Senator George Mitchell Institute of Global Peace, Security and Justice at Queen’s University (Northern Ireland).
He presented the causes of conflict of Northern Ireland, which has 20-year history. He also talked about civil movements formed during the conflict which later started to form political agenda.
Neil Jarman talked about all the challenges that come out on the way to peace such as the lack of political leader and clear strategies and underestimated problems while fighting.
At the end of the lecture the participants asked what they think about “Brexit” in Northern Ireland. They also drew parallels between the situation in Northern Ireland and Artsakh conflict.
