Chair of Socio-Economic Geography
The Chair of Socio-Economic Geography was founded in 1933-1934. From the foundation to 1936, it was directed by Professor Tigran Atabekyan, then by Professor Gurgen Kocharyan, Associate Professors Sirak Berberyan, Yerem Yeghiazaryan, Aram Ohanyan, Professors Tadevos Hakobyan, Lemvel Valesyan and Aramais Avagyan.
Ph.D., Associate Professor Vahagn Grigoryan is the head of the Chair.
From 1977 to 1991, the Chair conducted the professional courses "Local History" and "Methodology of Excursion Case Organization". From 2008 to 2013, the Chair organized the preparation and teaching of the Undergraduate curriculum and subject programs of the "Service" specialty.
Now the Chair implements the "Geography" (Undergraduate) and "Public Geography" (Master's) educational programs.
The Chair's contribution to the formation and development of the geography education system in Armenia is great. With the participation of professors of the Chair, geography textbooks of public schools and universities, educational manuals, and educational literature, as well as many scientific and pedagogical articles were created.
The Chair carries out research in the directions of proportional development and effective distribution of the RA economy, development and improvement of the resettlement system, socio-economic development of border and high mountain settlements, and geographical issues of the demographic situation.
During the years of its activity, the teaching staff of the Chair participated in the works of economic rounding up and administrative-territorial division of the Republic of Armenia.
The Chair has scientific and educational ties with the Chairs of Geography of K. Gumilyov Eurasian International University of Kazakhstan and the Southern Federal University of Rostov-on-Don.
