Chair of Armenian History
The Chair of Armenian History is a peer of the university, as it was created at the same time as YSU. Until 1930, it was called the Chair of History. In 1930-1931, the Chairs of the History of Armenia, History of the USSR, History of the Ancient World, and General History were formed on its foundation. The first head of the chair was Hakob Manandyan, academician of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR, who before that held the position of rector of the university. During his leadership period (1921-1927), the foundation of the educational work of the chair was laid, and the first educational programs were drawn up. Recognized historians-Armenologists worked in the chair for different years: Leo, H. Zoryan, T. Avdalbegyan, S. Poghosyan, A. Abrahamyan, H. Zhamkochian, M. Nersisyan, V. Parsamyan, L. Khurshudyan, Hr. Simonyan, St. Melik-Bakhshyan, B. Harutyunyan, P. Hovhannisyan, A. Simonyan, and others.
The chair's staff has published more than 700 monographs, various studies, and numerous scientific articles. The chair is, surely, one of the most important Armenian studies centers of the Republic.
The chair carries out scientific research activities in the direction of studying the issues of all periods of Armenian history. A significant place is given to source studies and historiography of Armenian history, historical demography, and cartography of Armenia. A large amount of work is done particularly in studying the issues of Medieval Armenian history, the Armenian question, the Armenian liberation movement, the Armenian Genocide, national ideology, the Artsakh issue, the history of the Armenian diaspora, and the history of the modern Armenian statehoods.
Well-recognized and leading specialists of the republic work in the chair, who regularly undergo training, and are involved in various international and local grant programs. The chair's scientist-pedagogues are the authors of educational manuals, which are also published in scientific periodicals with a high impact factor.
The members of the chair constantly participate in university, republican and international conferences, and make presentations on issues of Armenian history and the Armenian Diaspora.
The Chair of Armenian History is a training center for Armenologists-historians, which implements the "Armenian History" and "Armenian Studies" Master's educational programs.
