Chair of Social Philosophy, Ethics and Aesthetics

The YSU Chair of Social Philosophy, Ethics, and Aesthetics was founded in 1970. It was previously named the Chair of Historical Materialism, Ethics and Aesthetics, in 1993, the Chair of Philosophy and Ethics, and in 2001, the Chair of Social Philosophy and Ethics. Since 2018, the unit has been renamed the Chair of Social Philosophy, Ethics, and Aesthetics. Since 2001, the head of the Chair has been Ph.D. Eduard Harutyunyan.

The scientific research of the Chair is related to the socio-philosophical understanding of the social, moral, and political issues and challenges facing the Republic of Armenia mainly, which allows for imparting an Armenological orientation and applied results to the scientific works. In this regard, the Chair of Social Philosophy, Ethics, and Aesthetics is rightfully considered one of the best scientific centers that developed the concept of transition studies, where post-Soviet and transforming societies, socio-cultural security, social accidents, modernization of national identity, socio-cultural, political and civilizational risks, conflicts and problems of mutual understanding, modern globalization, network society formation, and anthropological transformations are studied.

One of the achievements of the Chair is the publication of Armenian textbooks, especially special courses. Especially in the last decade, relevant textbooks have been published for almost all Undergraduate and Graduate courses in philosophy, which are related to current issues of social philosophy and ethics and have significantly contributed to the modernization of the subjects taught in the Philosophy Department. The Chair also actively participates in TV debates, public discussions, and civil society initiatives organized on political, social, moral, and cultural issues of public importance.

It is no coincidence that the Chair employs the most outstanding and leading specialists of the republic, who regularly undergo training, and are involved in international and local grant programs. The faculty scientists of the Chair are also the authors of educational manuals, monographs, and scientific articles, which are also published in prestigious periodicals.
