Chair of Applied Sociology
Professor Lyudmila Harutyunyan founded the Chair of Applied Sociology in 1986 based on the YSU Sociological Research Laboratory (the latter has been operating in YSU since 1980). The Chair was one of the first ones where modern approaches and methods of studying society were applied, and the Armenian tradition of introducing global sociological thought and developing a national sociological school was formed.
In 2004, the Chair of Social Work and Social Technologies was separated from the Chair of Applied Sociology within the Faculty of Philosophy, Sociology, and Psychology, and since September 1, 2004, based on those two Chairs, the Faculty of Sociology has started functioning as a separate unit at YSU. Then, the Chair of Applied Sociology started functioning in the Faculty of Sociology.
The Chair conducts Undergraduate and Master’s degree programs, where students specialize in sociological research methodology, conflict theory, as well as social security and migration policy issues.
The Chair's staff conducts a variety of research in political, economic, military, communications, and media sociology, as well as studies security, gender, and migration issues.
The Chair actively cooperates with the Ministry of Defense of the Republic of Armenia, the State Migration Service of the Ministry of Territorial Administration of the Republic of Armenia, the International Organization for Migration, the OSCE Yerevan Office, the Caucasian Center for Research Resources and many other international and Armenian organizations.
The head of the Chair of Applied Sociology is Dr., Professor Artur Atanesyan.
