Chair of the Armenian Language
In 1919 the newly founded university had only one department - historical-linguistic, so from the very beginning an important place and role was assigned to the teaching of the Armenian language as a professional subject. The Chair of the Armenian Language became one of the units of the university that had and still has a significant role in teaching and researching Armenian Studies. From the beginning, the teaching of Armenian was put on a solid foundation, because at that time such prominent intellectuals as M. Abeghyan, Hr. Acharyan, G. Ghapantsyan, St. Malkhasyants, A. Gharibyan, G. Sevak, and others used to teach Armenian. With scientific and educational books, they greatly contributed to the development of Armenian studies and supported the upbringing of generations in an Armenian manner.
The devoted founders of the university were also replaced by those with dedication, who served to develop Armenian studies with their activities (Ed. Aghayan, A. Sukiasyan, M. Asatryan, S. Gyulbudaghyan, Al. Margaryan, R. Ishkhanyan, G. Gareginyan, H. Harutyunyan, L. Yezekyan, R. Sakapetoyan, and many others).
The main research fields of the Chair are diverse: issues of regulation of modern Armenian, recording, and evaluation of language shifts, relations between Eastern Armenian and Western Armenian, translation studies, issues of communication and speech culture, etc.
Various scientific and methodical works have been and are written by experienced pedagogues-scientists, so the scientific contributions continue, and the development of Armenian studies does not stop.
The professors of the Armenian language chair are engaged in fruitful teaching and scientific work.
The Chair regularly organizes scientific sessions, in which the professionals of both senior and younger generations take part, contributing to the study of the Armenian language.
The Chair implements the "Modern Armenian Language and Translation" educational program, as well as the "Armenian Language and Literature" Undergraduate and Master's (full-time and part-time) educational programs.
