General information
Soil salinization is an environmental worldwide serious problem that reduces soil quality and restricts the sustainable development of regional economies and agriculture. Such an ecological issue also exists in Armenia, particularly in Ararat plain. Considering the above-mentioned, the main objectives of this study are: to implement the assessment of soil salinization degree in the high-risk areas of Ararat plain, to generate the thematic maps describing soil salinization degree, to assess the quality of groundwater used for irrigation purposes by the use of IWQI and to generate the thematic maps, to conduct field, laboratory, theoretical studies of nonlinear mechanisms of soil salinization along the closed causal chain of the form: soil salinization - texture and structure - physical properties - hydrology - salinization, and propose ways to prevent it, taking into account the peculiarities of soil types and natural-climatic conditions of Ararat plain to suggest the innovative methods of remediation of salt-affected soils. The final results of the project will contribute to more effective implementation of activities directed against soil degradation, to harmonious functioning of the system “environment and society” and to sustainable development of ecologically high-risk areas.
