History
In the 1920s and 1930s, student scientific groups operated in different chairs of YSU. Almost two decades later, in September 1947, a general meeting of the members of these groups was called, during which it was decided to establish a student scientific society uniting the university students. Professor Yakov Khachikyan, Associate Professor of Philosophical Sciences, a one-time student of the Russian Department of YSU Faculty of Philology, was elected the first president of the newly created institute. In those years, the governing body of SSS was named the Central Council. In each academic year, several scientific conferences were organized, research works were carried out in permanent groups and student laboratories, and scientific articles were published. During that time, a number of projects implemented within the framework of SSS were also financed.
In the 1970s, the number of SSS members exceeded 900 per academic year, the number of scientific reports reached about 700, but in 1991, SSS activities were suspended.
YSU Student Scientific Society was re-established on May 25, 1996. A new charter was adopted, and a new governing body of SSS was elected, which is still called Academic Council. Associate Professor Ashot Aleksanyan, a post-graduate student at the YSU Chair of Political Science, Candidate of Political Science, was elected president of the reorganized SSS. In that period, scientific conferences began to be organized again, and the best works reported during these conferences were published.
During the 77-year history of YSU SSS, more than 9,000 students and post-graduate students joined the institute, and taking into account the fact that the first YSU student scientific group was created in 1922, the number of university students who had been SSS members is much larger. Many of the former members and representatives of the governing body of the SSS are currently representatives of the teaching staff of YSU faculties.
The activities of the SSS were successfully coordinated thanks to the individuals chairing the institute, among whom were Ruben Markosyan, Yeznik Mirzoyan, Karlen Khachatryan, Mikayel Malkhasyan, Mher Hakobyan, Vanatur Sherents, Mary Panosyan.
Since 2023, the activities of the SSS have been coordinated by Siranush Baghumyan, the president of the institute, applicant of the Faculty of History, YSU.
