Promoting Armenian-Kazakh scientific and educational ties: Kazakh students at YSU
Eleven graduate students from Gumilyov Eurasian National University (Kazakhstan, Astana) are currently undergoing professional training at the YSU Faculty of Geology and Geography. The number of Kazakh students visiting YSU as part of the memorandum of cooperation signed between the two universities in 2015 continues to grow year after year.
The students from Gumilyov Eurasian National University are attending lectures at YSU and using the university's literature resources to gather essential information relevant to their master's thesis topics.
"At YSU, each of us has our scientific supervisor, who helps us compile the thesis. We are deeply impressed by the teaching staff at the YSU Faculty of Geography and Geology. We can reach out to any of them with any question, and they are always ready to support us, answering the questions and giving valuable advice," shared Kazakh student Saida Tergeubayeva.
Speaking about the fruitful cooperation between the two universities, Karine Shakhoyan, a lecturer at the Chair of Socio-Economic Geography of YSU Geography and Geology Faculty, highlighted that in the first year, in 2015, two Kazakh students came to the university, and later the number of Kazakh students visiting YSU increased year after year.
"We engage with Kazakh students in discussions regarding the relevance, challenges, objectives, and methodologies of their chosen topics. We also explore global perspectives, offer guidance on what maps can be drawn within the framework of their topic, and provide any additional support they may require," said Karine Shakhoyan.
Aksel Potosyan, Associate Professor at the Chair of Socio-Economic Geography of the Geography and Geology Faculty, added that the two-week educational program for Kazakh students includes exploring the history, culture, and peculiarities of the national customs of the host country, and lectures are organized on these topics as well.
"In addition to organizing the educational process, we introduce them to Armenia’s economic and cultural life, arrange sightseeing tours to the historical and cultural sites in Armenia, while they prepare presentations on various topics related to their country and present them to the professors and students of the faculty," said Aksel Potosyan.
In this context, he pointed out that the faculty has plans for cooperation with other countries, including Germany and Russia.
Sargis Kelyan, Dean of YSU Geography and Geology Faculty, spoke about the provisions of the memorandum of cooperation signed between YSU and Gumilyov Eurasian National University. He initially noted that the visit of Kazakh students to YSU is financed by their university, and additionally, emphasized that YSU students also have the opportunity to Gumilyov Eurasian National University.
The graduate students of Gumilyov Eurasian National University often visit other faculties at YSU as well.
